Can I tether on my droid 2 without buying verizons "tethering plan" (or paying a service fee)? If so how?

I am considering buying a droid 2 but I understand it has a chip that makes it difficult to root, and froyo (which may have security of its own). I understand there was an "easy root" app to root android 2.2, but would I even need it? Google just pulled it from the app store from what I heard.

I dont want to pay any verizon fee's for tethering. I understand that on the original droid you can root it, and change some settings to tether for free, or you can use PDAnet (without having to root). D
